Press Release on Celebration of Gandhi Jayanti 2020

Consulate General of India, Frankfurt celebrated Gandhi Jayanti at its premises on 2 October 2020. Celebration began with an offering of floral tribute at the bust of Gandhiji at Peace Research Institute, Frankfurt by a CGI team led by Consul General Dr. Amit Telang.  This was followed by a function at the Consulate. The chief guest for the event at the Consulate was eminent author and Gandhian, Dr. Martin Kämpchen. Dr. Kämpchen delivered an insightful lecture on Gandhiji while also sharing Gandhi’s influence on his own life. The other dignitary who attended the event was Mr. Kerry Reddington, Deputy Chairman, Foreigners Advisory Council for Frankfurt. 

The main attraction of the event was a song on Gandhiji’s life recorded by Shri Nishad Phatak and group. In addition, a short video prepared by Apna Frankfurt- a Frankfurt based radio channel that promotes Indian art and culture - showcasing contemporary relevance of Gandhi and Gandhian values was much appreciated by the audience. 

The Consulate has also organised a Quiz Contest on Gandhiji‘s Life and work. The quiz organised in collaboration with the Darmstadt Indian Association received tremendous response. The names of the winners were announced during the event.

The celebration of Gandhi Jayanti 2020 took place with a small gathering of Consulate’s officials and a common invitation to members of Indian community and friends of India had to be avoided due to Covid-19 pandemic situation.

Gandhi Jayanti 2020 marked the culmination of two-year long commemorative activities that have been going on since October 2, 2018 to celebrate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
